A man has been fined close to $700 after a car became became airborne and speared through the side of the bus.

No one was seriously injured in the shocking crash in southern Brisbane, and it is now being described as the “escape of the century”.

Police allege the driver of a black SsangYong tried to merge from a centre lane and turn off near the intersection of Beaudesert Rd and Granard Rd in Archerfield about 6.30pm on Wednesday.

A blue Toyota Yaris swerved around the SsangYong before losing control and slamming into the bus, police allege.

It hit the public transport vehicle so hard it became wedged inside, with its undercarriage resting across both sides of the bus’s aisle.

“All of a sudden it was just bang, like an explosion,” witness Evan Boulton, who was in a car next to the bus, told 7NEWS.

“I’m like, ‘what the?’”

Boulton said: “That could have been me if that bus wasn’t there.”

The Yaris driver, a 45-year-old woman from Pallara, was taken in a stable condition to Princess Alexandra Hospital with chest pain and in shock.

The bus driver — a 66-year-old man from Sunnybank Hills — was not seriously injured.

The bus was returning to the depot and had no passengers at the time of the crash.

‘Escape of the century’

Retired police superintendent Peter Flanders said it was the “escape of the century — we should have had people dead in this crash”.

“Who can tell a story like that — that they punched through the side of a bus and walked out?” he said.

“That does not happen so she is the luckiest lady alive today.”

A 66-year-old Durack man driving the SsangYong was issued with a $690 traffic infringement notice and docked three demerit points for driving without due care and attention.
