An elected federal member of parliament has been arrested over an alleged assault.

Federal Member for Solomon Luke Gosling has been arrested after allegedly assaulting the Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly.

The administrator performs a similar role to that of a state governor and does not participate in the political process.

It is alleged the assault took place at the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin on July 18.

Northern Territory police confirmed they began an investigation into the incident last week, with police arresting the 54-year-old Labor MP on Thursday morning. He remains in police custody.

Gosling spent 13 years in the Australian Army before moving to Timor-Leste where he spent several years leading humanitarian and tourism projects before turning to politics.

A spokesperson for the administrator’s office said the incident was a matter for police.

“Our office will make no further comment,” they said.
