The inaugural flight sold out in just 45 minutes, with plane enthusiasts desperate to be part of the historic moment.
Flight trackers showed JQ362 was the most tracked flight in the world, with crowds lining the runway at both Western Sydney International and Coolangatta to witness the milestone.
At check-in, physical boarding passes were the hottest ticket in town. Young Jetstar superfan Ethan Leslie was given the honour of making the flight’s PA announcement before the aircraft departed 22 minutes behind schedule.

In the cockpit were Captain Guy Proctor and First Officer Aglaya Papadokokolakis.
“I’m also from Western Sydney, so to have the opportunity to fly out of an airport in my backyard is an amazing opportunity and a very special day,” said Papadokokolakis, a Blacktown local from a family of aviators.
The flight took off to the west before banking towards the coast over Tamworth, cutting across the state and landing just north of the border right on time.
Jetstar will operate 24 return flights every week from the new airport.
The next flight to Melbourne was due to depart Sunday evening, before WSI goes international on Monday with an Air New Zealand flight arriving from Auckland.
Singapore flights are scheduled to begin in late November.
