Two people have been killed and a child has been critically injured in a shocking highway collision on Monday.

Two vehicles — one towing a caravan — crashed on the North West Coastal Hwy in Hamelin Pool, 700km north of Perth near Shark Bay, about 11.30am.

The crash caused the caravan to roll.

“Two people died as a result of the crash,” WA Police said.

A 12-year-old passenger with critical injuries and an adult have been flown to Jandakot Airport on the Royal Flying Doctor Service jet.

The child will be taken to Perth Children’s Hospital and the adult will be transferred to Royal Perth.

Major Crash investigators are at the crash scene piecing together what happened.

A stretch of highway between Overlander Roadhouse and Billabong Roadhouse remains closed.

Main Roads WA urged drivers to “exercise extreme caution”.

Hamelin Pool is a popular tourist destination that makes up part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

It is known for its diverse stromatolites, rock-like structures also called “living fossils”.

There has been 131 deaths on WA roads in 2026, eight more than at the same time point in 2025, according to the Road Safety Commission.
