Police are hunting for a group of brazen thieves accused of a crime spree involving break-ins, stolen cars and the kidnapping of a man in northeast NSW.

The spree began when a BMW sedan was allegedly stolen from a home on Kalinda Pl in Hillvue, Tamworth, sometime between midnight and 2.10am on Monday.

Police later found the home had been ransacked.

The stolen BMW was allegedly driven to a petrol station on Jewry St in Taminda about 2.20am, where an occupant filled up with fuel before leaving without paying.

Just over an hour later, the BMW allegedly arrived at a motel on Gunnedah Rd in Westdale, where a group got out and kicked open the door of a motel room.

The group allegedly demanded keys and cash from a man in his 30s before stealing the keys to a Mazda station wagon, a mobile phone and a backpack containing his wallet and laptop.

They then allegedly broke into a second motel room and demanded keys and cash from a man in his 50s, before stealing the keys to a Toyota SUV and his wallet.

The group fled in the Mazda and Toyota. 

No injuries were reported.

But the alleged crime spree escalated about 4.35am when the group, including one person allegedly armed with a machete, approached another man in his 50s as he sat in a vehicle in a car park on Armidale Rd in East Tamworth.

Police were told the man was forced into the back seat of another allegedly stolen vehicle and driven to a bank on Peel St, where the group demanded he withdraw money.

Police responded but were unable to find the group. 

The man was later found uninjured.

Detectives have now released CCTV as they appeal for information over the alleged crime spree.

Police are also seeking two men they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.

The men are described as being of medium build and were wearing black hooded jumpers, black pants or shorts, and black and red face coverings.

They were last seen on Armidale Road in East Tamworth about 4.40am on Monday.
