A Sydney man searching for the only known video footage of his late mother has been reunited with the precious memory 23 years later, thanks to the 7NEWS archives.

Tashi Dorjee turned to LinkedIn last week in the hope 7NEWS still had footage of his mother, Mary Dorjee, being interviewed for Sydney Weekender at the family’s food stall in the 1990s.

“I’m trying to find old footage of my late mum from one of your shows the Sydney Weekender with Mike Whitney,” he wrote. 

“I’m not 100% sure the date but as a kid I remember him interviewing her at our family food stall The Himalayan Cuisine.

“And it would have been around 1995-1997 I think. Hopefully it’s in your archives. 

“I have no other video footage of her.”

“If you could help in anyway that would be awesome, would be great for her grandson to get to eventually see and hear her. Plus me hearing her laugh again (she would have done that a lot in the interview) would be a gift.

The LinkedIn post reached 7NEWS, prompting library staff to begin digging through decades of archived footage.

Just four days later, 7NEWS News Librarian Alex Scouller found the long-lost vision.

What’s more, the footage contained another surprise for Dorjee — his late father was in it too.

“You are incredible, thank you so much for this, you have really done something special for our family,” Dorjee said.

“My dad is in that video too! He’s wearing the shorts haha. He passed away this year. So it’s great to see them both together too.

“Have a great weekend and again appreciate you taking the time to do this.

“Eternally grateful, the Dorjee family.”

Dorjee later returned to LinkedIn to share the discovery and thank those who helped track down the footage.

“A huge thank you to Sean Power and his team at Seven West Media and the Seven Network, who went digging through the archives with nothing more than a rough date and a childhood memory,” he wrote.

“I’ve now watched and heard mum’s voice for the first time in 23 years, and one day her grandson will too.”
