Australian swimwear designer and model Sahara Ray has died at the age of 34.

Ray’s family said on Monday she “passed away last night surrounded by family at the hospital,” TMZ reports. A cause of death is yet to be confirmed.

“She was so loved,” her family told the outlet.

The daughter of legendary Australian big wave surfer Tony Ray, the designer accompanied her dad around the world as a youngster.

Based mostly out of Australia, California and Hawaii, Ray launched to fame on social media and quickly made a name for herself as a model before launching her swimwear brand Sahara Ray Swim in 2014.

Rumours began circling of a romance between her and pop megastar Justin Bieber in 2016 after they were pictured together in Hawaii.

She had most recently used her massive following on social media to document her pregnancy, giving birth earlier this year to her first child Snow.

Her last Instagram post, from July, featured several images of her baby with the caption “my whole heart ... baby Snow”.

In 2024, Ray revealed she had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome — a rare disorder which causes the immune system to attack the body’s nervous system — after being hit by a car going 128km/h.

Be the first to know:

“It basically set my body into shock which sent my body into this crazy sickness and I got really, really sick for a week-and-a-half to two weeks,” she said at the time.

There is no cure for the syndrome but treatment can ease symptoms, according to Mayo Clinic.

Recovery can take several years, but most can walk again after six months of treatment.

The first symptom usually experienced is weakness and tingling in the hands and feet.

On TikTok, Ray uploaded a video sharing a “life update” about her progress.

“I honestly don’t even know how to start this video, I’m so overwhelmed with what’s going on with me,” she said at the time.

“So basically, right now I’m paralysed from the tops of my upper thighs all the way down to my feet. I can’t walk at all.”

“I am primarily in a wheelchair and I have a walker,” she said, adding that she “can barely walk” with the walker.

The posts referencing her condition have been deleted in the years since, and more recent posts feature her walking freely while heavily pregnant.
