Two pet dogs have found themselves in hospital needing emergency care after diving into a large bag of lollies.

Three-year-old beagle sisters Scooter and Jada were taken to the Animal Emergency Service in Jindalee, Brisbane, about 8pm on Monday night after their owners noticed a 1.1kg packet of fruit-flavoured jelly snakes had vanished.

The pair were examined and given medication to induce vomiting.

“The primary concern for Scooter and Jada ... is the amount of sugars or artificial sweeteners — xylitol — that can be in sweets,” veterinary nurse manager Kate Wesche told 7NEWS.com.au in a statement.

“Xylitol can be very toxic to dogs causing seizures and affecting the liver.”

Weshe said the dogs had chomped through a 1.1kg party packet of The Natural Confectionery Company snakes which did not contain the sugar substitute.

Even so, “the amount of natural sugar they would have consumed can still cause severe gastrointestinal upset”.

Scooter was found to have enjoyed the lion’s share of the Monday night treat.

Resisting temptation, Jada had eaten only a single jelly snake.

“After a short stay for observations, Scooter and Jada were both given clean bills of health and able to go home,” Weshe said.

“All reports are that they are going well.

“Beagles are common culprits for eating things that they shouldn’t, but 1.1kg of jelly snakes is definitely a first.”

‘No regrets - she’d do it again’

The clinic posted Scooter’s story on social media, where others shared their own experience with beagles.

“Our Beagle broke into the 20kg tub of dry food and ate (until) he literally couldn’t get up,” one person said.

“We now store the food in a cupboard in the garage behind a door that has a child lock on it.”

Another said: “If beagles had thumbs they’d breaking into safes and banks.”

Commenters on the post — which has gone far and wide with 65,000 reactions — said a downtrodden-looking Scooter would definitely have another crack at the lollies if given the chance.

“Scooter has no regrets — the next chance she gets she will do it again,” one person said.
