For anyone who is tired of constantly reaching for a razor, the Philips Lumea IPL Hair Removal Device has had a major price drop.

The device is currently $499, down from $849 on Amazon Australia, giving shoppers a 41 per cent saving for a limited time.

Unlike traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, IPL, or intense pulsed light, it works by delivering light to the hair.

Philips says the Lumea system is designed to help reduce hair regrowth over time, rather than offering permanent hair removal.

The device is currently promoted as delivering up to 92 per cent hair reduction after three treatments.

Results can vary depending on individual factors, including hair and skin characteristics, and the device is intended for use on suitable combinations of skin tones and hair colours.

Philips also cites a study conducted in the Netherlands and Austria involving 46 women.

After two treatments on the face and three treatments on the armpits, bikini area and legs, 84 per cent of participants were satisfied with hair reduction on the face, 86 per cent on the armpits, 78 per cent on the bikini area and 83 per cent on the legs.

Those figures come with an important caveat: the study was relatively small, and the results reported are based on the specific treatment schedule and participants involved.

They should not be interpreted as a guarantee of the same results for every user.

A five-setting system

The Lumea gives users five manual intensity settings, allowing the treatment level to be adjusted according to comfort and suitability.

It also features a Skin Tone Sensor, which Philips says checks whether an area is suitable for IPL treatment and prevents treatment on skin tones that are too dark for the device.

Philips states that the system is suitable for skin tones I to IV and naturally dark blonde, brown and black hair.

The device comes with three attachments designed for different areas of the body, including a larger body attachment, a precision attachment intended for the face and an attachment designed for the bikini area.

The routine is designed to be manageable

One of the biggest selling points is convenience. Philips recommends starting with treatments every two weeks, followed by monthly touch-ups. The brand says treating both lower legs can take around 15 minutes.

The Lumea app is designed to make that routine easier to follow, offering step-by-step guidance, treatment scheduling, reminders and a way to keep track of previous sessions and device settings.

For anyone who has ever bought a beauty gadget with the best intentions before abandoning it in a bathroom cupboard, having a treatment schedule and reminders built into an app could be useful.
