A worker has died during a tragedy involving a truck at an Australian mine site.

Glencore confirmed a death involving mobile equipment at the United Wambo Joint Venture coal operation in the NSW Hunter Valley.

NSW Police said they were called to the site just after 1pm and found a man believed to be in his 50s had been hit by a truck.

The worker died at the scene, and is yet to be formerly identified.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues,” Glencore Coal Australia chief executive Peter Sharpe said in a statement.

“This is tragic news for our entire workforce.

“Our immediate focus is on providing support to the worker’s family and our employees.”

Emergency services including police remain at the mine, where operations have been suspended.

The Minerals Council of Australia offered its condolences to loved ones and colleagues of the worker.

“Safety remains the highest priority for our industry, and any loss of life is a stark reminder of the critical importance of our ongoing efforts to ensure every worker returns home safely,” council chief executive Tania Constable said.

“The MCA, alongside the entire Australian mining community, will continue to work hard to eliminate fatalities across the sector.”

Industry in mourning

NSW Minerals Council chief executive Stephen Galilee said the industry was in mourning.

“This tragedy highlights the hazards faced by those working in our industry and is a sombre reminder of why the safety of our workforce must always be our number one priority,” Galilee said.

“The thoughts of tens of thousands of miners across NSW will tonight be with the family and colleagues of the deceased, and also with the Hunter mining community at this difficult time.”

The Mining and Energy Union said a union safety officer is on site, with an investigation underway.

“Our thoughts are with the worker’s family, friends and workmates during this incredibly difficult time,” the union said.

“Every worker deserves to return home safely at the end of every shift.”

NSW Minister for Natural Resources Courtney Houssos said it was a “heartbreaking day for the Upper Hunter community”.

“The loss will be felt across the NSW mining industry,” Houssos said.

According to Glencore, the open cut mine commenced in 2020 and produces thermal and semi-soft metallurgical coal for export.

The site had 550 employees and contractors in 2025.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
