It’s officially the one-year anniversary of our family’s move from Sydney to Melbourne.
I loved my decade in Sydney, but with three little ones Bec and I desperately needed more space and to be closer to grandparents.
So here we are. And oh boy, how Melbourne has changed me.

For the first time in my life, I’ve become a coffee drinker. It’s unavoidable in Melbourne, but it’s not just a cliche, coffee really is everywhere and it’s very, very good.

It’s not exactly breaking news, but in case you’re wondering, my order is a strong flat white.
I really wanted it to be a macchiato so I could brand it a “Sam Macchiato,” but sadly I didn’t like the taste.
That’s not a hint for people to deliver me free coffee by the way. I don’t want a “coffee for comments” scandal and I only drink one a day anyway. For now.
The next big change was my purchase of a ride on mower! Admittedly, it’s mainly been used for Instagram photo shoots, but I’ll get there.

We have so much more space in our new backyard. We’ve spotted kangaroos, kookaburras, lizards, ducks and even the occasional cow.
My neighbour told me the animals are probably picking our yard because they’re hungry and I don’t mow the lawns. I took it as a compliment. My laziness is feeding the locals.
Life out near the Yarra Valley has been a great move for our family. While some people opt for a “sea-change”, we’re absolutely loving our “tree-change”.
After a busy week on the road with Sunrise, there’s something about the simplicity and quiet of nature that helps to relax and reset. Until the small humans wake up and ruin it.
But there’s one thing about Melbourne I won’t be embracing.

While Sam has adapted to Melbourne life, he will never embrace the ‘accent’. Credit: SuppliedI draw the line at adopting the Melbourne accent.
Before you come at me — it is absolutely a thing. Many (not all) Melburnians pronounce ‘e’ as ‘a’ and ‘a’ as ‘e’.
For example, most people would say “Albo hurt his elbow”, but people with what I’m now calling “The Mal-bourne accent” would say “Elbo hurt his Albow”.
It’s a thing! And I’m sorry to break it to you, but the worst thing about the Malbourne accent is that people who have it, can’t hear it.
Uh-oh, I think I’m going to hall (hell).
