A man has been rushed to hospital after being attacked by a shark in regional Western Australia.

Emergency services were called to Glenfield Beach, north of Geraldton, where a surfer aged in his 50s was was mauled about 9.30am on Monday.

St John WA said paramedics arrived soon after and rushed the man to Geraldton Health Campus about an hour after the first report, The West reported.

A shark of unknown species and size was reportedly seen about 40m off shore at Drummond Cove Beach, just north of the attack site, according to the WA Government’s shark-tracking website SharkSmart.

The state’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) confirmed it is investigating a “reported shark incident”.

“DPIRD is working with local authorities and further information will be provided as it becomes available.“

Locals have been urged to “take additional caution in the Glenfield Beach area”.

Rangers from the City of Greater Geraldton have closed all beaches in the area and a patrol vessel is currently monitoring the waters nearby.
