A man has died after a fire tore through a unit in Sydney’s northwest.

The blaze broke out at a unit block on Church St in Ryde on Saturday, prompting a major emergency response about 3.40pm.

Firefighters battled the flames before making a grim discovery inside a second-floor unit, where a man was found dead.

He is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 60s.

Police said no suspicious circumstances had been identified at this stage.

A crime scene has been established and an investigation is underway.
