Viral English cricketer ‘Clicky Ponting’ has been suspended by his local club for the “foreseeable future”.

The Saltburn Cricket Club has issued a statement after vision of Brian Devine (seemingly clicking his fingers as the ball passes the bat off opposition players) exploded on social media.

Devine was then dubbed ‘Clicky Ponting’ while many pundits accused him of blatant cheating.

The vision shared by online whistle-blowers appeared to be damming, showing Devine clicking his fingers (to mimic the sound of an edge) and then appealing as the keeper takes the so-called catch.

Saltburn’s wicket keeper has taken an astonishing 31 catches from his past eight matches, including eight in one innings — one more than the Test record of seven.

“This statement is issued in response to the widely publicised complaint made against a Saltburn Cricket Club member and, as a consequence, against the club more generally,” the club said.

“We are treating this allegation with the utmost seriousness and, as a family-centric club, we are fully cooperating with the NYSD League’s investigation.

“We believe that the club acted decisively as soon as the complaint and investigation were made known to us.

“The player at the centre of the complaint has been suspended and will not play again for the club this season or in the foreseeable future, pending the outcome of this investigation.

“Initial discussions have already taken place between club officials and the League.

“This has been a very distressing and stressful experience for all those concerned, and we would ask that this reality is borne in mind and that personal boundaries are respected, as we are an amateur club entirely run by volunteers.”

The club said it would make no further comment about the situation.

Saltburn Cricket Club are sitting on top of the Division 2 ladder in the North Yorkshire and South Durham Cricket League after 15 matches, but face possible sanctions if found guilty of cheating.

British cricket writer Amer Malik said it “looks as if Saltburn CC are in for a rude awakening”.

“Having allegedly cheated their way through each weekend, the only viable option is to relegate them to the lowest division and impose extended bans on every 1st and 2nd-team player who represented the club during the period in question,” he said.
