But the departing coach revealed the decision was made before the series even kicked off.
“I just feel like now’s the right time for someone else to have the opportunity to lead this great state,” Daley confirmed on Monday morning.
The criticism was often brutal and the job relentless, but Daley is going out on his terms and as a champion.

Speaking exclusively to 7NEWS later on Monday, Daley said he felt “great” with the decision.
“You might have thought that after winning there was a possibility that you’d want to do it again, but I just knew that my time was up,” he said.
Daley was quick to dismiss any health concerns behind his decision.
“There’s nothing wrong with me. I am as fit as I’ve ever been,” he said.
His legacy is undeniable. From ending Queensland’s streak of eight series wins to his final act, victory in a decider at Suncorp Stadium.
“To see them do that up there at Suncorp Stadium was very special,” he added.
“New South Wales will always hold a special place in my heart because it means so much to me.”
NSWRL has wasted no time appointing his successor, with Blues assistant Matt King set to be unveiled as the next head coach on Tueday.
The smiling assassin in the NSW camp is a true blue Origin star who has earned the respect of the playing group.
“Matt King is a first grade coach in waiting now. The players respect, love him,” Daley said.
Roosters utility Connor Watson added: “He honestly just bleeds blue, like, got so much passion for that jersey,”
