A child has died after a horror afternoon house fire in the NSW Central West.

Emergency services rushed to the Waugoola Road home in Woodstock, about 22km north-east of Cowra, at 3pm on Saturday after a house fire was reported.

A woman and two children were able to escape the property but a four-year-old remained trapped inside.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and later found the body of the child inside.

The woman was taken to Cowra Hospital in a stable condition for smoke inhalation.

A crime scene has been set up and police are investigating the circumstances of the fire, officers said in a statement.

“A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner,” the statement said.
