A juggernaut of Australian music known for his vast knowledge of the industry, Glenn A. Baker, has died at the age of 74.

Baker’s friend and fellow music journalist, Stuart Coupe, announced he died on Friday morning.

“This is a post that I was hoping I wouldn’t be making for a considerable period of time,” Coupe said in a post to social media.

“But after an illness Glenn A. Baker passed away earlier this morning. I’m beyond sad.”

Baker is best known for his passion for Australian music, especially rock ‘n’ roll, during its explosion onto the international scene in the 1970s.

He started his career in the industry after he helped established radio station 2JJ — which would go on to become Triple J.

In 1975 he became the manager for the band Ol’ 55 which would go on to have 55 hit singles including (I Want A) Rockin’ Christmas, which Baker cowrote.

By the mid 80s, Baker had grown to become a well-known figure within the Australian music scene thanks to his radio career on Triple J and Triple M, a music label he cofounded called Raven Records and winning the BBC’s Rock Brain of the Universe three times.

He went on write 16 books on both travel and music, was credited for written pieces in more than 200 magazines and was the Australian editor at Billboard for two decades.

His reputation had led to him becoming a member of the ARIA Hall of Fame advisory committee, inducting legends such as Max Merritt, Billy Thorpe, The Masters Apprentices and Australian Crawl.
