Australian tennis star Maya Joint has been caught in the middle of an awkward handshake snub after US Open doubles campaign came to an end.

Joint and Chan Hao-ching, the 14th seeds, were defeated by fourth seeds Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei in a fiery clash that finished 6-4 6-4.

Ostapenko celebrated aggressively in the direction of Chan’s coaching staff after winning the match before the frosty exchange at the net.

Chan shook hands with Ostapenko but then completely snubbed compatriot Hsieh, while Joint shook hands with both opponents.

Ostapenko appeared confused by the snubbing, gesturing with her arms and briefly forgetting to shake hands with the chair umpire.

Tensions had threatened to boil over multiple times throughout the match with Ostapenko calling the the tournament supervisor at one point, seemingly suggesting Chan was receiving coaching from the stands.

But the handshake snub appears to stem from a long-running feud between Hsieh and Chan, who both hail from Chinese Taipei.

Hsieh has previously accused the Chinese Taipei Tennis Association of favouring Chan and her sister Latisha with preferential treatment, including funding and coaching support.

The ugly issue was thrust into the spotlight ahead of the Rio Olympics in 2016 when Hsieh withdrew from the doubles.

Hsieh was reportedly upset after her brother and coach was given reduced accreditation for the Games, compared to the Chan sisters, who’s father and coach was given priority.

There have also been other incidents between the two families that have caused issues resulting in often fiery encounters when they come up against each other.

Hsieh, now aged 40, is searching for her first US Open title which will complete the set for her, having won seven previous majors.
