Progressive Democrat candidate Abdul El-Sayed has roasted US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance in his victory speech after becoming the nation’s first Muslim senator.
El-Sayed won a US Senate seat in Michigan, defeating Republican Mike Rogers in one of the nation’s most important swing states.
The son of Egyptian immigrants, El-Sayed took the stage on Tuesday local time, taking swipes at both Trump and Vance in his victory speech.

“JD, Habibi,” he said, addressing Vance. “There is this delicious irony in the fact that you’re constitutionally obligated to swear me in in January.”
El-Sayed finished the jab with the taunt “Wolverines one, Buckeyes zero” referring to the college football teams in Michigan and Vance’s home state, and previously held Senate seat, of Ohio.
El-Sayed then addressed the US president, who has repeatedly sought to link him to terrorist organisations despite no evidence of such ties, questioned his loyalty to the United States, and called him “Mohammed” rather than his real name.
“I know you struggle with my name, so after JD swears me in, you can just go on and call me Senator,” El-Sayed said to cheers from supporters who’d gathered for his victory speech.
El-Sayed, a former public health official, defeated Republican Mike Rogers, a former congressman, to claim victory of the seat.
“Mike, enjoy your retirement,” El-Sayed told supporters during his victory speech.
Be the first to know:
“You chose hate and Michigan chose hope. May we never have to see the likes of you in this state again.”
He campaigned on an unapologetically progressive platform that made some moderate Democrats uneasy.
El-Sayed has also been a staunch critic of Israel, and a proponent of “Medicare for All” which would replace the current mix of private and public health insurance with a government-run, single-payer system.
His victory comes as Democrats won control of the US Senate after flipping Republican seats across the country on Tuesday.
