7NEWS longtime journalist Gina Treharne has died after a battle with cancer.

Treharne worked in the 7NEWS newsroom for decades, earning a reputation as a passionate and dedicated journalist whose curiosity was relentless.

In an emotional tribute broadcast on air, Sydney presenter Michael Usher described her dedication to bringing viewers the news as “an absolute inspiration”.

“Our hearts are broken for Andrew, Charlie and Eliza and her entire family,” presenter Angie Asimus said.

“They were everything to her.”

Asimus paid tribute to her positive spirit, saying she wouldn’t want anyone to be too sad.

“That was her way. But we are certainly struggling with that right now,” Asimus said.

“She was the best of us and we will miss her. An absolute ray of sunshine in our newsroom.”

Treharne was described as a very special woman who was loved by everyone in the 7NEWS family.

“Our deep love to all of Gina’s family,” Usher said.
